Clothing for holiday in July and August
Anonymous Question is:
Could you advise on clothing for Bangkok/Chiang Mai at this time of year please
My Answer is:
Hi Anonymous
Ok, firstly both Bangkok and Chiang Mai tend to follow the same seasons and patterns with regards weather.
So what you can expect is the weather in Bangkok and Chiang Mai to always be around the 30 degrees mark. However in July and August you will often find short spells of rain, especially in the afternoon. Although this is classed as part of the rainy season for most people it is also a welcome break from the humidity. You can also experience thunderstorms and monsoon like downpours, but this is not a certainty and if you are lucky you may not see anything other than the occasional short spells of rain. Even if you do experience the downpours, you will find that if you choose to go and eat, or do a bit of shopping or something that is indoors, by the time you have finished not only has the rain stopped, but there is no sign that it even rained in the first place.
Without doubt February and March are the best and hottest months to visit Thailand. If however you can’t visit at this time, do not be put off with regards the rain, it really is of no consequence and causes you very few problems. On the other hand by visiting at this time of year you will find that Thailand is not as busy with tourists, therefore you can visit all the attractions with less problems and also get great deals on any purchases you make, as the traders are more desperate for your custom.
So there are some great reasons to visit during the rainy season.
Now to answer your original question about clothing, it all depends on the individual, personally I have never worn any coats or long trousers due to the rain, and certainly never because it was too cold. Maybe the best thing to do is to bring your normal holiday clothing, as you will certainly get days when you can sunbathe and swim. You can buy an umbrella when you get here should you need to, and perhaps a lightweight small overcoat would be a good idea, but remember it will still be hot.
Also remember that Bangkok has some great shops, so why not wait until you get here and see for yourself what the weather is like. Then you can buy anything that you feel you may need for the remainder of your holiday.
Hope you decide to take advantage of the season and lower prices, and have a great time.
Regards
