Bangkok Airport – Suvarnabhumi
The main Bangkok Airport, Suvarnabhumi, is a gateway to Asia. In fact, its name ‘Suvarna’ meaning golden and ‘Bhumi’ meaning land is an indication of its importance in connecting the rest of the world with Continental Indo-China, comprising Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Burma, which together are referred to as the Golden Peninsula or the Golden Land. The ultra-modern airport is located 30 miles east of Bangkok City. Suvarnabhumi airport is also referred to as the new Bangkok International Airport, since it opened only as late as 2006. The older airport, Don Muang, is still in use but largely caters to low cost flights by domestic and regional carriers.
As the principal Bangkok International Airport, Suvarnabhumi is extremely busy. In fact, it is the third busiest airport in Asia with approximately 42.5 million passengers using it in 2010. It has been continuously rated among the top ten airports in the world and has won several awards and honours.
The reason for the popularity of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is that it is designed for passenger comfort and convenience. Spread over seven floors that include restaurants, fast food counters, duty free shops, a swimming pool, gardens and a beauty salon, it is an air traveller’s dream come true. In addition, there is a spa where passengers can get traditional Thai massages or foot massages to get over their jet lag. A hotel located just 300 metres from the Bangkok Airport terminal provides a convenient resting place for passengers awaiting connections.
To help passengers get into the city Bangkok Airport at Suvarnabhumi is well connected by several modes of transport. Besides public taxis and a limousine service, an air conditioned Airport Express bus service connects the airport to some of the city’s leading luxury hotels. There are also public buses to various parts of the city. Shuttle buses ferry passengers from the terminal to the car rental centre and the public bus terminal for onward connections to the city.
Since August 2010, a newly opened Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link offers the option of an express train that connects to Makkasan station at the city centre in 15 minutes, while the city line takes half an hour to Phaya Thai station, making eight stops along the way. For getting from Bangkok Airport at Suvarnabhumi to Don Muang Airport, there is a direct shuttle minibus that takes 40 minutes on the expressway.
With its concrete, steel and glass structure, the wave like design of the Bangkok Airport at Suvarnabhumi may at first glance appear to be too western in its design concept. Its modernity has the advantage of making it a green airport that makes efficient use of natural light and once inside, the Thai art that adorns its walls and spaces, and the service with a smile policy of the airport staff, which is typical of local culture and hospitality, makes it the perfect entry point into the City of Smiles. It’s no wonder that is called the Airport of Smiles.
